Swimming Pool Algae Prevention For Swimming Pools, Koi Ponds, Hot Tubs, Spas, And Above Ground Pools.
You don't always know when you're in a rut.
But if you're still using chlorine to control algae in your swimming pool, brother, you're in a rut!

ALGAE BAR TM
Patent Pending

YOU MAY NEVER HAVE TO
SHOCK YOUR POOL AGAIN

You finally find a quiet moment to relax in your swimming pool, but to your horror millions of little algae cells have beat you to it. Shocking weekly with chlorine will control the green algae in your swimming pool's water, but now your swimming pool's a chemical soup of which you're just another ingredient.

A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO A GROWING PROBLEM

Shocking your swimming pool with chlorine provides a temporary solution at best. Once the chlorine dissipates the algae returns. This is the traditional method of controlling algae. Now there is a better way.

Throughout this webpage we make reference to low chlorine levels. Chlorine is an excellent sanitizer and when green algae becomes a problem in your swimming pool chlorine provides a quick solution to your problem. But as a long term algae preventative chlorine falls far short.

An Algae Bar is a long term algae prevention system that allows you to use chlorine for what it was designed for, as a sanitizer to control bacteria and Total Dissolved Solids in your swimming pools water.

Regular use of an Algae Bar in your swimming pool means you will use less chlorine. You will no longer have to endure red stinging eyes, nausea, or bleached clothes just to stay one step ahead of green algae.

An Algae Bar is a non chemical, long lasting, slow release method of killing algae in your swimming pool. Unlike chlorine, which dissipates and requires reapplication, an Algae Bar accumulates, day by day, adding more and more algae killers to your swimming pool water.

When we first started selling Algae Bars we naively thought that backyard swimming pools were our only real market. But from the feedback we've received from customers who've used the Algae Bar in hot tubs, spas, Koi ponds, fountains, water gardens, and even industrial applications, such as rinse tanks, we now know we were wrong. We know that an Algae Bar works great in a 7,000 gallon swimming pool, but when you use an Algae Bar in 1,000 gallons or less it is phenomenal. It is not uncommon for our spa customers to use the word "outstanding" when describing the results with their Algae Bar. One customer who uses an Algae Bar in her Koi pond wrote to tell us she couldn't believe how fast her pond cleared up.

If you've ever had to stop production to clean your rinse tanks because of algae build up, using an Algae Bar in your system will save you far more in labor, and down time costs than the cost of one Algae Bar.

When you're reading our website substitude the word swimming pool with hot tub, spa, Koi pond, fountain, water garden, rinse tanks or whatever your application might be. In the case of Koi ponds, fountains, water gardens, rinse tanks and other applications where you can't use chlorine at all, if your water volume is under 7,000 gallons one Algae Bar will be enough to control the Algae.

Use one Algae Bar if your swimming pool is 7,000 gallons or under.

Use two Algae Bars to control the green algae in 14,000 gallons of water.

Our testing has shown that three Algae Bars in 20,000 gallons of water is the effective limit of our product.

Keep in mind that the end goal here is to have an algae free pool or pond. If your water volume is say 6,000 gallons, near the limit of one Algae Bar, 2 Algae Bars will definately do the job. For a 13,000 gallon pool 3 Algae Bars will be extra insurance that you will definately prevent algae from blooming and fouling your water. With the Algae Bar more is better.

To read the testimonials we have recieved about the Algae Bar:

"Thanks a million!!! I got the algae bar the day I left on a 5 day mini-vacation. I put it in my murky, green Koi pond just before we left. We arrived home last night and I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the pond. I just knew it was the night and lack of light playing tricks on my eyes. So, I got up very early this morning to see if I was imagining things, but there was my Koi pond, just as clear as a bell, even in the bright morning sun! Before it had been so thick with algae, I couldn't even see my beautiful fish, being in the sun, my brand new pond filled with algae very quickly after we got it started this spring. I'm sure Algae Bar will save me a lot of $$$ on chemicals that I'd be afraid to use anyway for fear of hurting my expensive Koi. So far they seem to be very happy and healthy. I'm keeping your name and website address so I can be sure to start the season out with a new Algae Bar next year. You have a great product and I'm sure you have many happy customers!"

We are especially happy with the results our customers have had using the Algae Bar in their Koi Ponds. We have received letters telling us how clear the water is and how much easier it is to maintain their Koi Ponds now that the green algae is under control. One other inportant note about Koi Ponds, all feed back about the Koi themselves is good. All the pond owners we have heard from report their Koi to be in good health and happy.

You will find horror stories all over the internet about people who have overdosed their koi with some chemical or other, including copper. The first signs of the problem are usally sick or dead Koi. Once those chemicals have been added the damage has been done. The only way to remove the chemicals is to drain the pond water.

Why you won't overdose with an Algae Bar

An Algae Bar is a slow release method of adding copper ions to your pond water. The copper ions are added slowly over the course of days and weeks. Over the course of several weeks the copper content of your ponds water will raise inperceptually. You will know the Algae Bar is working because your pond's water will clear up as you filter your water. Once the algae is gone and the pond water clears up you can remove the Algae Bar from your pond. This will prevent the copper ions from accumulating more than is needed to prevent green algae. If you start seeing signs of algae reappearing you will know the level of copper ions has deminished and you can put the Algae Bar back into your pond to start the process over again.

You can't overdose your pond with copper by forgetting about the Algae Bar. The electrolytic effect that releases the copper ions also tarnishes the copper ends of the Algae Bar. This tarnishing of the exposed copper blocks the emission of copper ions. Once or twice a week, depending on the temperature of the pond water, you will need to clean the copper ends of the Algae Bar. If you forget about the Algae Bar for weeks on end without cleaning the copper ends the electrolytic effect stops, preventing your pond water from being overdosed with copper ions.

What about the silver ions harming your bacteria filter?

The amount of silver released by the Algae Bar is so minute that we can't even measure it when water samples are summited to a lab for analysis. This is why we insist that pool owners use chlorine to sanitize their pool water.

When using an Algae Bar in your Koi Pond we recommend that you maintain your pH at between 7.5 and 9, Your water hardness between 125 and 150 ppm, and the salinity of your pond water between .25 to .3

Although the picture shows 5 Algae Bars the price of $24.95 is for only one Algae Bar

WHAT IS AN ALGAE BAR ?

An Algae Bar is a 1/2 inch diameter by 3 inch long silver plated copper bar. When an Algae Bar is placed in water an electrical effect called electrolysis occurs. Electrolysis produces a small electrical current between the two metals. This current causes the copper to corrode releasing copper ions into the water. Circulating the water distributes the copper ions to the green algae. When the copper ion comes into contact with the algae cell the outer membrane of the cell is destroyed, thereby killing the algae cell and preventing reproduction. An Algae Bar provides the same results you will get with the more expensive computer assisted ionization devices, at a fraction of the cost. The next time you use an algacide look at the main ingredient, it is always copper. But with an Algae bar you can't add too much copper, as with an algaecide, so you never get staining or a foaming film on the top of your pool water.

One Algae Bar is effective in up to 7,000 gallons of water. In smaller bodies of water such as koi ponds, spas, water gardens, fountains and rinse tanks in plating lines the Algae Bar is phenomenal.

THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE BIG POOLS IS NOW AFFORDABLE FOR YOUR SWIMMING POOL, KOI POND, OR SPA

This is not new technology. The fact that copper kills algae has been known for centuries. What this is,is a simple, low cost alternative to the never ending dependence on chemicals that you unknowingly inherited when you bought your swimming pool. Ionization systems cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousands of dollars. An Algae Bar costs $24.95, and when maintained properly will last for six months, which is an entire pool season in any part of the country.

An Algae Bar will keep 7,000 gallons of water algae free and will pay for itself in a season from the savings you will realize when you stop shocking your swimming pool.

An added benefit of an Algae Bar is realized in the hours you will gain enjoying your swimming pool, or pond, instead of fighting algae to keep it clean.

HOW THE ALGAE BAR WORKS TO PREVENT ALGAE IN YOUR SWIMMING POOL, KOI POND, AND SPA

Since an Algae Bar is a slow release method of controlling algae it will not clear a swimming pool already visibly contaminated with algae. If this is the case with your swimming pool we suggest you once again shock your swimming pool. Now simply place the Algae Bar into the leaf catching basket of your skimmer. By the end of the first week your Algae Bar should begin to tarnish. You will see this as a dull, soft coating on the copper ends of the Algae Bar.

It is this breakdown of the Algae Bar which provides the 24 hour, 7 days a week assault on the algae in your swimming pool. Continue to filter your swimming pool water. You will in the first weeks of using your Algae Bar experience some algae on the sides of your swimming pool. This algae is very weak and will not need to be shocked with chlorine, simply brush the algae off the side of the swimming pool and continue to filter your pool water.

You will know the Algae Bar is working in two ways:

1. Any evidence of algae will be easily brushed away without requiring chlorine shock, and eventually the algae will stop appearing.

2. Your pool maintenace routine will change. Instead of starting your pool cleaning on Thursday or Friday to have your pool ready for the weekend you will be using your pool. Instead of monitering your chlorine levels all the time, you will just add chlorine occasionaly to sanitize and eliminate the Total Disolved Solids that accumulate over time.

BLACK ALGAE and MUSTARD ALGAE

Before we developed and started using the Algae Bar in our swimming pools we had a Black and Mustard algae problem. Black algae would appear occassionally. Mustard algae was much worse. Since we began using the Algae Bar neither Black nor Mustard algae has appeared again.

A FEW SIMPLE IDEAS FOR ALGAE PREVENTION

Properly maintaining your Algae Bar and swimming pool filter are the keys to algae free swimming pool water. Here are a few tips:

KEEP YOUR SWIMMING POOL , KOI POND OR HOT TUB FILTER CLEAN!!!

We cannot stress how important it is to keep your filter clean. Each time you brush the algae from the sides of your swimming pool you need to filter the swimming pool water. The swimming pool filter collects the algae you have brushed off the sides of your swimming pool, if you don't clean your swimming pool filter you provide an opportunity for algae to re-enter your swimming pool. We recommend cleaning your swimming pool filter at least once a week, during the first 4 weeks. After the fourth week we suggest you clean your filter as needed. A clogged filter or a filter with a hole in it will leave your swimming pool water cloudy. If your swimming pool filter is clean and in good shape, and you still have cloudy water, adding swimming pool clarifier to your swimming pool water should do the trick. Also, you must filter regularly, Anywhere from 8 hours,(minimum)to 24 hours per day is absolutely essential if you desire an algae free swimming pool.

CHLORINE USAGE

When you use an Algae Bar, you do not have to keep a constant chlorine level in your pool water to control green algae.

Use the chlorine to sanitize Total Dissolved Solids and bacteria. We have been told for so long that pH, chlorine, and alkalinity have to be at exactly the right levels for optimum pool water balance, that we stop questioning the salesman's word. We believe that the periodic use of chlorine is just as effective at controlling TDS and bacteria as the constant use of chlorine, without the side effects associated with chlorine. If you feel more comfortable with some chlorine present in your pool water a chlorine level of 1 ppm works very well with the Algae Bar

Using an Algae Bar to control algae you can administer the chlorine at night, when the pool is not in use. When you are ready to use your pool, most of the chlorine will be dissipated. Your pool will not only be sanitized and algae free, but free of the side effects you have to endure when you maintain a constant chlorine presence.

We, ourselves, only add chlorine, at night every few days to sanitize our pool water. If we have a pool party, or there are a lot of children using the pool, we sanitize again that night.

Experiment with your chlorine use until you find the right frequency of chlorine useage for your pool. You will be surprised, when using the Algae Bar how little chlorine will be needed to maintain sparkling clean pool water.

SWIMMING POOL AND SPA WATER BALANCE

The chemical balance of your swimming pool water is important for swimmer comfort and to protect your swimming pools equipment. Maintain a pH level between 7.4 and 7.8, an Alkalinity level between 80 to 140 ppm, and a Calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm.
When the pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness are all within these recommended ranges your swimming pools water will be in balance.

WATER BALANCE IN KOI PONDS

Lower pH's increase the toxicity of copper ions to Koi, it causes a loss of electrolytes, and interferes with ion regulation by Koi.

Salt has a high complexing ability and reduces the toxicity of copper to Koi. So higher salt levels are beneficial.

Hardness also reduces the toxicity of copper to Koi sometimes by 20 times or more. So harder water is beneficial.

When using an Algae Bar in your Koi Pond we recommend that you maintain your pH at between 7.5 and 9, Your water hardness between 125 and 150 ppm, and the salinity of your pond water between .25 to .3

SWIMMING POOL AND SPA WATER SANITATION

While an Algae Bar will keep your swimming pools water algae free, it will not effect organic wastes such as saliva, urine, perspiration and suntan oils that accumulate in your pool water. Examples of sanitizers are chlorine, bromine, and ozone generators. When using chlorine or bromine to "shock" your pool we recommend that you remove the Algae Bar. The high concentrations of these chemicals will burn the surface of the Algae Bar, removing the silver, making it ineffective and difficult to properly clean.
Our experiences with chlorine have shown us that using a floater with 1 inch tabs in your pool water effectively oxidizes these organic wastes. You will be surprised how little chlorine you need to effectively sanitize your swimming pools water.

WHAT MAKES AN ALGAE BAR SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING LIKE IT?

The process of elecrolysis which is the underlying principle of copper and silver ionization causes the copper and silver to corrode. This process creates oxidation on the copper and silver elements that builds up to the point that it stops the emission of copper ions into the water. The other products do not have a way for you to remove this oxidation. An Algae Bar is easy to remove from the water. You simply pick it up from the strainer. You can see that the copper is beginning to oxidize, and you can easily remove the oxidation with a scouring pad. The whole process takes only about 4 or 5 minutes. Your Algae Bar will be as good as new and continue emitting copper ions into your water killing the algae.

MAINTAINING YOUR ALGAE BAR

As we just mentioned your Algae Bar will tarnish over time. This is a natural occurrence, that if allowed to build up, will make your Algae Bar less effective. We suggest you clean your Algae Bar at least once a week, or more often, if the copper ends become very dull before a week has passed. Cleaning your Algae Bar is a simple process. Simply polish the two copper ends until the tarnish is removed. You can use a Brillo Pad, a scouring pad, or any fine grit sandpaper, or emery cloth.

HOW SAFE IS AN ALGAE BAR

It has been determined that a copper level of .1 to .3 ppm in your swimming pools water is sufficient in controlling algae. An Algae Bar provides .1 ppm of copper. The EPA Drinking Water Standard allows 1.3 ppm of copper for drinking water. This shows an Algae Bar to be very safe to swim with, yet still deadly to algae. We recommend you only use the chlorine tabs in your floater when using an Algae Bar. The low .1 ppm copper level combined with the small dose of chlorine from the floater effectively control algae.

YOU WILL SPEND THE MONEY ANYWAY

An Algae Bar costs $24.95. You will spend that much and more fighting green algae with chemicals. An Algae Bar will save you money you would otherwise have spent on chemicals, you will spend less time cleaning your swimming pool, and more time enjoying it. Isn't that why you bought your pool in the first place. This summer when you're making your third or fourth trip to buy some chlorine to use against green algae, think about the Algae Bar. When you're scrubbing your pool again and again, think about the Algae Bar. When you're so fed up with maintaining your pool, instead of being in it, think about the Algae Bar. Or better yet, buy an Algae Bar now. Put the money you save on chemicals to better use. Use the time you would otherwise be spending cleaning your pool to better use, and enjoy relaxing in your pool knowing the Algae Bar is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep your pool water the cleanest on the block.
